On June 5, runners celebrated the 50th anniversary of Jim Ryun’s record-breaking mile run at the Festival of Miles event in San Diego. With mile races for kids, adults, elite athletes and even ElliptiGO racers, the event provided quite a show for the spectators in attendance. The evening’s highlight was two runners—Eric Avila and A.J. Acosta—breaking the 4-minute barrier in the men’s elite mile.
“All those yellow shirts, they came out to support. It was amazing,” said Avila, who had a slew of fans sporting shirts that read “Go Eric!” with cheers that nearly drowned out the announcer. “Amazing. Amazing. I can’t even describe it right now.”
