2014 NYC Half Marathon

Sally Kipyego and Geoffrey Mutai won the New York City Half Marathon over the weekend, clocking in at 1:08:31 and 1:00:50. Kipyego’s time broke the event record of 1:08:35, which was set on a slightly different course.

“It was very good. I think it was a little of everything, the last bit of it was a little bit downhill so I think that helped a lot,” she said. “The last three miles were painful.”

Buzunesh Deba (1:08:59) was second in the women’s race and American Molly Huddle (1:09:04) took third.

Mutai finished ahead of Mo Farah (1:01:07), who fell in Central Park around the halfway point of the race and lost contact with the lead group of Stephen Sambu and Mutai. He was able to push forward and finish second. Sambu was third in 1:01:08.

“I’m not sure what happened,” said Farah, who collapsed at the finish and was taken off in a wheelchair. “I just remember falling down and hit the ground quite hard. At that point, I just wanted to get back up and get behind, get with the group.”

Mutai dropped Sambu near the end of the race. “I tried to push it, and I know I was testing my body,” he said. “I know I had good training.”
