2014 Healthy Kidney 10K
Stephen Sambu and Joyce Chepkirui earned victories at the annual race in Central Park.

Stephen Sambu and Joyce Chepkirui won the men’s and women’s races at the UAE Healthy Kidney 10K in New York’s Central Park over the weekend.
10K world record-holder Leonard Patrick Komon held the men’s lead for the first half of the race, but he grew tired and it was at the halfway mark that Sambu made his move. After the Kenyan passed his countryman at a water station, he continued to build a lead and crossed the finish line alone in 27 minutes, 39 seconds—a career best.
The women’s race was a pack affair right from the start. A group of three led the race early, with all of them trading time at the front. But as the kilometers ticked away, two women emerged at the front—Kenya’s Chepkirui and Ethiopian Mamitu Daska. Chepkirui eventually pulled away and finished first in 31:17, 24 seconds ahead of Daska.
