Paula Radcliffe Contemplates Retirement

A persistent foot injury has sidelined her since 2012.

A persistent foot injury has sidelined her since 2012.

One of the greatest marathoners of all time, Paula Radcliffe may soon be calling it quits. The 39-year-old British Olympian still holds the women’s marathon world record.

According to an interview with the BBC, Radcliffe, who didn’t compete in the 2012 Olympics due to a nagging foot injury, says she’s not sure if she will ever recover enough to race again.

“Targets have gone out of the window,” she said “I’m very much in that limbo where I know and accept that realistically it may not be possible. But at the same time I have a little window of hope and I would rather be able to finish my career in a race, rather than a race I can’t actually get to the start line of.”

Radcliffe had hopes of running the 2014 edition of the London Marathon.

“I’ve not even been able to run after the kids in the last few months, and you start to think about the first goal — to get back and be able to have a normal active life and then worry about if I can get back to competing,” she said.
