Once the world’s fastest marathoner, Tergat is now hospitalized after a horrendous car crash.

Former marathon world-record holder Paul Tergat is lucky to be alive. On Thursday, he was involved in a head-on collision with a truck along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway in Kenya. Tergat had been driving to Eldoret to receive an honorary degree of science at Moi University.

“I cannot remember what happened but I just found myself in hospital,” he recalled from his hospital bed.

Though he is in stable condition, Tergat had mentioned that he is experiencing pain in both of his legs.

X-rays have cleared him of any major injuries, according to the article in the Daily Nation.

Former Boston Marathon champion Moses Tanui visited Tergat in his hospital room and said Tergat is going to be flown to Nairobi at his family’s request.

Tergat indicated he was alone in his car, a Mercedes-Benz, when the accident occurred.
