Past Winners Return To XC Club Champs

Jacob Riley and Mattie Suver will race in Bend, Oregon at the 16th annual event.

Jacob Riley and Mattie Suver will race in Bend, Ore. at the 16th annual event.

The USATF hosts their annual Club Championships this weekend in Bend, Ore.

All told, more than 1,200 runners from 100 teams will compete for bragging rights as well as a total prize purse of $25,000.

At this year’s event, Mattie Suver returns to defend her crown. Suver ran in 2012 for the Boulder Running Company and came across the line in 20 minutes, 1 second on the 6K women’s course. Fellow teammate Brianne Nelson, who also returns this year, came in second.

Expected to give these two Colorado runners a run for the money is Jordan Hasay (Nike Oregon Project) and Shannon Rowbury.

Meanwhile, the men’s race also contains last year’s winner: Jacob Riley. He led the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project last year. Riley is the only top-five finisher from last year who returns to the event.

But this doesn’t mean it will be a shoo-in for Riley. He squares off against some talented rivals that include Matt Centrowitz, Alan Webb, and German Fernandez.
