Pair Of Lost Trail Runners Walk Out On Their Own

They were ill prepared for their expedition.

When William McBride and Antony Weber set out for a trail run on Sunday, they didn’t expect to get completely lost. The two men were out along the many confusing trails that comprise the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon.

Sergeant Steven Dangler, search and rescue coordinator for the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, said that both runners weren’t prepared for a 20-hour expedition, let alone a trail run. They had none of the essentials for a long run: cell phone, extra food, water, and extra clothes.

Sgt. Dangler described the beginning part of the runners’ journey: “They headed west towards Nesmith Point and then headed east on Moffett Creek trail. Their intention was to head back down on the Tanner Butte trail. They got turned around on the Moffett Creek trail where the trails aren’t as well defined.”

However, Dangler admits the men did something right. One of them told his girlfriend where they were going. She called 9-1-1- when the two failed to come back around midnight.
