One Ethiopian Refugee’s Incredible Journey

Many marathoners make a long trip to their race, but Ethiopian refugee Urige Buta’s journey is nothing short of amazing.

Reuters reports on the Norwegian citizen who fled his native East African country and ended up in Scandinavia by accident.

“My father’s friend said, ‘I know people smugglers, just do as they say and you’ll be safe’, so I did,” Buta explained. “I don’t know what happened to my father. Last I heard he had escaped but nobody knows anything for sure.”

Burta is now heading to the Olympics–his longtime goal.

“You can’t always have what you want,” Buta said. “Maybe it’s been difficult but my dream has always been to run in the Olympics and that is about to come true.”

In a country where most of its citizens are rich, Buta is poor. He works long days as a janitor.

“I start work at 6 a.m. and go maybe 5 or 6 hours without a break, and my legs just ache by then,” he said.
