Olympic Champion Wanjiru Will Not Run Worlds
With his financial well-being in mind, half-marathon world record holder decides on real Berlin Marathon.
Olympic Marathon gold medalist Samuel Wanjiru of Kenya has decided not to run the World Championships this summer in order to challenge marathon world record holder Haile Gebrselassie at the Real Berlin Marathon in September. It looks as though Wanjiru has taken a page out of Gebrselassie’s book and decided that a big payday and possible world record are worth more than a world championship title. It’s a shame that the top two marathoners in the world will not even be present at the World Championships, but who can blame them?
