Oklahoma’s First 100-Mile Trail Race Announced

Approximately 100 runners are expected to take part in the ultra.

Oklahoma just got ultra friendly. This October, the Pumpkin Holler 100 (mile) will kick off  at the J.T. Nickel Preserve near Tahlequah. A 100K and 50K race are planned as well. The race is being organized by Runners World, a Tulsa running store (not affiliated with the magazine).

“I love it. I love being out there that long,” said Kathy Hoover, co-owner of Runners World. “I love the challenge of trying to push myself beyond what people see as normal. There’s a few of us that are beyond crazy.” Brian Hoover, Kathy’s husband expects approximately 100 runners and a total of 300 runners for all races. The 100-mile distance has a whole host of challenges that differ from the traditional 26.2-miles that comprise the traditional marathon–challenges like hydration, nutrition, and just being able to stay up for 22-28 hours while on your feet. “Basically, you have to get used to being up overnight, staying awake, and you have to get used to running on dead legs,” Kathy Hoover admits.
