NYU Coach Wins Run For The Diamonds

The top finishers of this long-standing race are awarded diamonds.

Top finishers of the long-standing race awarded with diamonds.

Jon Phillips, a running coach at New York University, won the 101st running of the Berwick Marathon Association’s Run for the Diamonds on Thursday. The 9-mile race, held annually in Berwick, Pennsylvania, awards the winners diamond rings and pendants. Phillips, running for the New York Athletic Club, won the race in 45:29. Conditions there were hardly ideal with intermittent snow flurries causing the roads to become slippery.

“The toughest part of running in the wet snow was going up the big hill,” said Phillips who was referring to the initial opening incline. “The footing was tough going up the hill. So I took it conservatively and then pushed the downhill.”

Phillips had placed 25th in the ING Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon in September.

Craig Miller of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, finished 12 seconds behind.

In the women’s division, Heidi Peoples of Scranton, Pennsylvania was the first to break the tape. Her victory on Thursday was her third Run for the Diamonds title.
