New York Road Runners Club Facing More Difficulties

Many New York City runners aren’t pleased with the organization since Hurricane Sandy.

According to a report in Sunday’s New York Times, the New York Road Runners Club (NYRR) has been going through some hard times.

Since its handling of last year’s New York City Marathon in light of Hurricane Sandy, races hosted by the NYRR have experienced sharp declines in terms of turnout. Last November, the NYRR insisted that the NYC Marathon continue despite the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Two days before the race, organizers suddenly changed their mind, which angered many participants.

Since then, CEO Mary Wittenberg has been trying to control the damage.

She has negotiated a settlement with the race’s insurance company in order to offer refunds to participants, and has sought to improve the organization’s brand by reaching out more to charities.

“All the marathon did was stress, ‘keep doing what we do, having an impact on the community and the runners,'” Wittenberg said.
