NYC Marathon Bans Hydration Backpacks

Jogging strollers are banned as well.

Jogging strollers are banned as well.

In the wake of the devastating terrorist bombings at the finish line of this year’s Boston Marathon, it should come as no surprise that other American marathons are taking security that much more seriously.

The New York Daily News is reporting that officials with the New York Road Runners are now banning the use of hydration backpacks at that city’s marathon.

Not surprisingly, this move has not been popular with some runners.

“I’ve been training with my CamelBak all this time,” wrote Tami Mask on Facebook. “I’m screwed!”

The list of banned items at the New York City Marathon includes strollers, vests with pockets, and “costumes covering the face or any nonformfitting, bulky outfits extending beyond the perimeter of the body.”

Lisa McGarry is preparing for her 11th New York City Marathon and isn’t pleased with the decision. “I opened [the New York Road Runners] email to see that I can carry water — or tea — in anything but a vest or a pack,” she remarked. “I know this is just one race in one city. And I can adapt and deal … but I had just solved my issue and now I need to come up with another, new solution just for New York.”
