NYC Council Approves Armory Improvement

A $1.2 million earmark will make the track even faster.

The New York Road Runners’ news service is reporting some good news for that city’s indoor track enthusiasts.

Apparently, the New York City council has approved a $1.2 million earmark to resurface one of the top indoor venues in the United States, the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory.

This resurfacing will give the Armory track the same surface that is being used at the IAAF World Championships next month in Moscow, as well as the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Outgoing Councilman Robert Jackson was a huge proponent of the track.

Work is supposed to be complete by the 2013-2014 indoor season, which begins on Dec. 1. This new surface should make the track faster and potentially facilitate the breaking of new records.

“For over 20 years, the Armory Foundation has served as an invaluable resource for New York City’s youth,” said Council Speaker Christine Quinn. “I thank the Armory Foundation for their continued work to provide sports and educational programming to the community, and look forward to celebrating the new track’s inaugural race at the 2013 PSAL Pilgrim Games.”
