New York City Marathon Announces Lottery Selections For 2014 Race

More than 77,000 marathon hopefuls applied for spots in the 2014 race.

The TCS New York City Marathon selected 9,170 runners from more than 77,000 applications for the 2014 race on Wednesday.

The 26.2-mile race through the city’s five boroughs, slated for Nov. 2, will feature an estimated 47,500 to 50,000 runners.

New York Road Runners, which organizes the race, announced the details of Wednesday’s drawing in a press release.

There are a variety of ways to earn a spot in the marathon, including the non-guaranteed method of applying through a lottery. Of the 77,087 applications submitted prior to the March 18 deadline, 9,170 were chosen for the race.

The rest of the field will be filled through guaranteed spots, such as time qualifiers, failed attempts at earning a spot the last three years, and those runners who were affected by the 2012 cancellation of the race. Professional runners and charity runners will make up the remainder of the field.

“This is always one of the most exciting days of the marathon season,” NYRR President and CEO Mary Wittenberg said. “Tens of thousands of runners from around the world now start to focus on their personal journey around New York City’s five boroughs. The race itself is only one day, but the experience — from physical training to mental preparation to fundraising for some — is a journey that lasts for months and is often an experience of a lifetime.”
