New World Best At 98th Bay To Breakers 12K
Sammy Kitwara runs fastest 12K ever as American Deena Kastor finishes third in women’s race.
Kenyan Sammy Kitwara blew away the field at the 98th ING Bay to Breakers 12K in San Fancisco, CA. In the process Kitwara set a world best of 33:31 for the distance. The former world best of 33:42 was set in 1993 by Kitwara’s countryman Ismael Kirui. Kitwara easily distanced himself from the field, defeating runner-up Tilahun Regassa of Ethiopa (34:15) by more than 30 seconds. Justin Young, who was named to the US World Championship marathon team this past week, was the first American across the line, finishing eighth in 36:05.
In the women’s race Ethiopian Teyba Erkesso (38:29) outdistanced Kenyan Lineth Chepkurui for the title. American Deena Kastor had high hopes for the first American female win since 1993, but came up short, finishing third in 39:04.
