Muktar Edris Wins Cross della Vallagarina

Ethiopia’s Muktar Edris had a nice birthday yesterday.

At the 36th edition of the Cross della Vallagarina, Edris who turned 19 on Sunday, won the men’s 9K race in commanding fashion.

He led from gun to tape, and ended up prevailing by 42 seconds over second-place finisher Stefano La Rosa of Italy. Third place went to Ukraine’s Sergiy Lebid.

“It was an easy race,” said Edris. “I ran my final race in Europe before returning to Ethiopia to prepare for the World Cross Country Championships.”

Edris was the world junior champion at the 5,000m distance. He has raced frequently in Italy since then. His victory on Sunday marked the third time an Ethiopian has won the Cross della Vallagarina.

Meanwhile, in the women’s 6K race, it was an entirely Italian affair with athletes from the host country claiming the top three spots.

The win went to Silvia La Barbera, who came across the line in 22 minutes and 44 seconds. Valeria Roffino and Agnes Tschurtschenthaler took second and third, respectively.
