For those who keep up with European road races, the Media Blenio, a 10K race held in Dongio, Switzerland, is a pretty big deal.
On Monday, 2012 5000m world junior champion Muktar Edris of Ethiopia won the annual race. His finishing time was 28:10.
Most importantly, Edris defeated his countryman Imane Merga by a large margin: 13 seconds. Merga won silver at this year’s World Cross-Country Championships.
Kiprop Limo of Kenya came in third with a 28:34 showing.
The Media Blenio consists of eight laps over 1.25K throughout the small village in the Italian-speaking area of Switzerland.
Throughout the race, it was a duel between Merga and Edris. Merga was able to hang in for six laps, but at that point it became Edris’ race to lose.
Merga has won the prestigious race twice, in 2010 and 2011.
Edris has been on a roll in the European racing circuit. He prevailed in the Campaccio, Villa Lagarina and the Cinque Mulini Cross Country, which were held earlier this year.
