The Achilles injury which had bothered Moses Mosop at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon last October has become bad enough that he has relinquished his spot on the Kenyan Olympic Marathon team. News reports from overnight say that Emmanuel Mutai, the reigning World Marathon Majors champion, will replace Mosop on the team, which was confirmed by Mutai’s manager Michel Boeting on Twitter:

“I feel sorry for Moses Mosop but very happy for Emmanuel Mutai gets the opportunity to be at the Olympic Marathon in London.”

Mosop owns a bronze medal from the 2005 World Championships in the 10,000m event. He is managed by Jos Hermens and coached by Renato Canova. He is married to fellow elite runner Florence Kiplagat and has a daughter named Aisha. He made his Olympic debut at the 2004 Games in Athens, finishing seventh in the 5,000 meters.
