Morton, Gardner Set American Ultra Records
Mike Morton broke Scott Jurek’s mark by nearly seven miles.
The very best America has to offer in the ultrarunning realm were on display at the World 24-hour Championships in Katowice, Poland last weekend.
In the men’s division, Mike Morton, the winner of this year’s Badwater Ultra Marathon, one the world’s toughest foot races, prevailed with 172.457 miles.
He led throughout the race.
Germany’s Florian Reus took second with 162.624 miles, while Ludovic Dilmi of France was third in 160.201.
In the women’s event, Connie Gardner of the United States also broke an American record. She ran 149.368 miles in a day’s time, which was nearly a two-mile improvement over the old mark held by Sabrina Moran.
Gardner took second overall in the race. First place went to Michaela Dimitriadu of the Czech Republic. She logged 151.579 miles.
American women won the competition over France and Great Britain. Suzanna Bon of Sonoma, California took fifth overall.
