The United States has a new champion in the women’s middle-distance events: Morgan Uceny. On Sunday, proved that she may be the best in the world at this distance in the Diamond League meet in Birmingham, England. Her winning time was 4:05.64.
Uceny is on a roll as of late. Her victory Sunday was the second time that she beat the top-ranked 1500m runner in the world, Maryam Yusuf Jamal of Bahrain, in ten days.
Uceny used the same strategy that she employed in Lausanne in the last Diamond League meet: She tucked in behind the leaders for the first three laps and with 200 meters left in the race, she powered around them for the win.
“It felt great,” said Uceny, following Sunday’s victory. “In Lausanne, I felt a little dead. I was just happy to come away with a victory, the way I felt. And then here, I felt antsy the whole time, I just really wanted to go after it. But I’m learning some patience.”
