Michigan Distance Coach Ron Warhurst Retires

After 36 years at the helm in Ann Arbor, Wolverine headman calls it a career.

Ron Warhurst, the legendary men’s cross country and track coach at the University of Michigan who guided the Wolverines to numerous Big 10 Conference titles and NCAA berths during his 36-year tenure, announced his retirement on Wednesday.

“I have had a very nice run at Michigan,” Warhurst said in a press release through the school. “I’ve coached some great individuals who have become great men and great friends, and I appreciate all they have done for my career.”

Aside from his teams’ accomplishments, Warhurst coached multiple individual NCAA champions, dozens of All-Americans and guided Olympians such as Canadians Kevin Sullivan and Nick Brannen, as well as 2008 Olympic 1,500-meter bronze medalist Nick Willis of New Zealand.
