Menjo Sets New Record In Australia

The 31-year-old Kenyan ran unchallenged in the second half of the race.

Josphat Menjo of Kenya won the Zatopek 10K race in Melbourne, Australia on Thursday. His time, 27:39.80, was the fastest ever recorded in the race’s 50-year history. And not only did he set the meet record, but he also made it look easy, winning with a 26-second margin. Menjo ran the second half of the race unchallenged. Second place went to Ben St Lawrence of Australia who clocked 28:05.25, while American Bobby Curtis was third in 28:08.78.

“I am happy with my time as it is December and I haven’t been training for this,” said Menjo after the race. “I slowed down to try and take them with me at 5000m but they didn’t come.”

Menjo has the fastest 10,000m recorded this year (26:56.74). He has been on an incredible streak this season, running PRs from the 1500m to the half marathon. Before the race, he had alluded to a new weightlifting routine as being one of the reasons behind his recent success.
