Matt Centrowitz PRs In Europe

Matthew Centrowitz set a huge personal best at Thursday’s Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, and said that he’s not done yet.

“I still have a lot of racing left in me,” he said here after coming on strong in the last half-lap of the 1500 meters to finish third in 3:31.96. “I want to finish off the season with some more PBs.”

Centrowitz’s time improved his personal best of 3:34.46, set last year, by more than 2½ seconds; is the fastest by an American this year; and moves him into ninth place on the U.S. all-time list. The 22-year-old, who won a bronze medal at the 2011 IAAF World Championships, finished fourth at the London Olympics.

Observing that athletes often experience a letdown in their first races after the Games, Centrowitz acknowledged that he didn’t know what to expect coming into the Lausanne Athletissima meeting. Asked if he felt he had something to prove after finishing in London just off the medal stand in London, he said, “I feel like I proved it by finishing fourth: That I’m a consistent medal contender. Obviously, it hurt really bad just to be so close.”

Centrowitz returns to England for Sunday’s Aviva Birmingham Grand Prix, the next stop on the Diamond League circuit, where he is on the start list at 1500 meters.
