Massive Debut For Kipchoge In Hamburg

Kenyan betters the course record by 28 seconds.

Eliud Kipchoge was the king of the 5000m event, and it now appears that he’s the king of the marathon.

The Kenyan blazed the field at the Haspa Marathon in Hamburg, Germany on Sunday. His winning time of 2:05:30 broke the course record.

“I promised a course record and I did it,” he said. “It was great to have all the people along the course supporting me.”

The 28-year-old Kipchoge was part of a five-man lead pack at the 33K mark and at that point, he made his move. Two kilometers later, he had widened the gap by 14 seconds and rolled to victory from there.

Limenih Getachew, Yekeber Baybal and Belay Asefa — all of Ethiopia — tried to catch him but were not able to.

Kipchoge shattered the previous course best, held by Ethiopia’s Shami Dawit, by 28 seconds.

Lithuania’s Diana Lobacevske was the first female to cross the finish. She covered the 26.2 miles in 2:29:17.

Maja Neuenschwander of Switzerland came across second in 2:30:50.
