American Distance Runner Mary Akor Suspended For Doping

The 37-year-old tested positive for a banned substance last year at a race in Mexico.

American runner Mary Akor, who won the Pittsburgh Marathon in May, has received a two-year suspension for using an illegal substance.

The 37-year-old tested positive for clenbuterol during an in-competiton urine test at the Gobernador Marathon in Mexico.

Akor has been disqualified from competition beginning on Dec. 6, 2012, which was when she supplied her sample for testing.

She resides in Gardena, Calif.

Clenbuteral is a medicine used to treat breathing disorders such as asthma.

Akor has represented the United States at the IAAF World Championships and owns a 2:33 marathon PR. She was born in Nigeria and became an American citizen nine years ago.

She won the 2012 edition of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Los Angeles Marathon, clocking 1:14.:19.
