Marathoners And Their Running Rituals

Many on the starting line at this Sunday's ING New York City Marathon will be doing more than striders and stretches.

Many on the starting line at this Sunday’s ING New York City Marathon will be doing more than striders and stretches.

Runners like Alison O’Brien, 38, will be donning something special: green underwear. “Every race, most trainings. I don’t know if I had a good race when I did it one time and then I stuck with it. That’s my thing. I don’t know why,” she said.

Alison will also be wearing a purple skirt.

Other marathoners are a little more serious. Amy Ellixson is running for Team Alzheimers. She wears a purple rubber bracelet every time she runs. “I freak out if I can’t find it,” she said. “I’ve come to the conclusion that somehow running for this cause and wearing this bracelet has, in some crazy way, helped prevent me from getting injured.”

And some runners like Ethan Zohn have their rituals–like putting on socks and shoes a certain way.
