Ethiopia has lost one of its shining stars. Meskerem Legesse, a 2012 Olympian in the marathon, passed away on Wednesday.

According to All, the runner died in a Connecticut restaurant where she was eating.

Friends said that she suddenly collapsed to the floor. Emergency crews performed CPR on her to no avail. She was just three weeks away from delivering her second child.

The baby was successfully delivered by staff at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where Legesse was taken.

According to friends, Legesse was very careful during this pregnancy. “She always tried to eat healthy and she always makes sure her son eats good,” said Fatima Sene. “I just don’t know what to say.”

Legesse had not been back to Ethiopia for nine years and had made plans to return.

“She wanted to see her mother, so I want to get her home,” Sene said. “I want to make sure she goes home.”

Legesse also has a two-year-old son.
