Marathon “Sisters” In Pursuit Of Gold

The two Kenyan champions are as close as possible.

The two Kenyan champions are as close as possible.

Mary Keitany and Edna Kiplagat have different last names, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be as close as sisters.

According to a report filed by Reuters, the Kenyan members of the Olympic marathon squad are best friends.

“For us we have known each other for so long, so we have no differences,” said Kiplagat who won the 2011 World Championship marathon in Daegu, South Korea. “We have been friends, we have been running together. She is like my sister.”

The elite runners know each other so well, they tend to finish each other’s sentences.

The pair have been training in their country’s Great Rift Valley alongside the third teammate, Priscah Jeptoo.

“We can’t see anything that is going to separate us. If I win or she wins, no problem,” Kiplagat says.

Keitany adds: “Yes, really no problem.”

Both Keitany and Kiplagat have husbands who are runners and they say their family support has been instrumental.
