She is looking to dip under 2:20.

Last year’s champion at the BMW Frankfurt Marathon, Mamitu Daska, will be returning to the German city looking for another win.

This time, the Ethiopian is looking for a sub-2:20 showing. With a 2:21:59 already to her credit, Daska is also the course-record holder there. Previously, the mark had been owned by Kenya’s Caroline Kilel (2:23:25), set two years ago. Along with Daska’s mark, the men also ran a course record last year when Wilson Kipsang blazed a 2:03:42. In that showing, he came within four seconds of the world record.

Daska’s main rival in Frankfurt will be fellow countrywoman Bezunesh Bekele.

Three years ago, Bekele won the Dubai Marathon in 2:24:02. She also garnered second at the Berlin Marathon in 2010.

Other women’s competitors include Kenya’s Georgina Rono, who placed sixth in Frankfurt in 2009. Last year, Rono won the prestigious Eindhoven Marathon where she ran a personal best. This year, she finished third at the Boston Marathon.
