Makeshift Boston Memorial To Come Down

The Mayor made the decision after consulting with victims and family members.

According to the Boston Globe, a memorial to the victims of April’s tragic bombings at the finish line of the Boston Marathon will be removed Tuesday.

Since the incident, Copley Square has been filled with items of remembrance such as photographs, flowers, and candles.

Boston Mayor Mayor Thomas M. Menino wrote to the victims and their families, saying that the time has come to remove the items. They will be taken to the city archives where they will be cleaned and preserved.

“It is my hope,” Menino wrote, “that the respectful closing of the temporary memorial will help us all look to the future.”

One of the mayor’s advisors said that the decision to take down the memorial was made after discussing it with survivors and family members.

Last Friday, many runners paid their respects at the site. One was avid marathoner Omar Gutierrez.

“All these people came here and gave up their running shoes for this memorial,” he said. “For runners, that’s a powerful statement. It’s very moving.”
