Makau Responds To Canova’s Marathon Prediction

He thinks his record is around to stay.

A bit of intrigue coming out of Kenya: One of the top marathon coaches in the world, Renato Canova, made a prediction that last year’s second-place finisher at the Boston Marathon, Moses Mosop, will break Patrick Makau’s world record this spring.

“What I am sure is that next year [this year] after the London Marathon, the record will be no more Patrick Makau’s, and the record is under 2:03,” Canova boldly stated to an Italian blogger while he was in Italy for the Boclassic race on New Year’s Eve.

Canova thinks it will happen at the Rotterdam Marathon and if Mosop doesn’t break it, Wilson Kipsang or Geoffrey Mutai will.

Makau responded last week to Canova’s predictions, noting that not many people are happy with his record. “It makes me wonder if the record is a preserve for some region, tribe or runners,” Makau said. “What shocks me is that some people are speaking ill of me just because I broke the world record.”
