London Olympic Marathon Course Challenged

A London council is taking legal action regarding the course.

A London council is taking legal action regarding the course.

The Tower Hamlets council located in London’s East End is upset by a decision to change the 2012 Olympic marathon course. The original route included a closing stretch from Tower Bridge to the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, but that idea has been scrapped and the current route now has the marathon starting and finishing in London’s famous Mall.

According to the council, the decision to change the route is in breach of promises made in London 2012’s bid to stage the Games and an “abuse of power.”

London 2012 chair, Lord Sebastian Coe, defended the decision to change the route. “We wouldn’t have created an Olympic Games that is in large part delivered in the East End if that were the case,” he said.

Organizers claim the new route will be better for spectators and avoid transport difficulties.
