London Marathon Officials: The Race Will Go On

Officials are revisiting security arrangements for Sunday’s race.

After the tragic events at Monday’s Boston Marathon, officials at the London Marathon — which takes place this Sunday — said the race will go on.

Security was beefed up at major U.S. cities after two explosions rocked the finish line area in Boston. That included New York, where police officers were dispatched to landmarks and bridges, and Washington, D.C., where Pennsylvania Avenue was shut down to pedestrian traffic in front of the White House.

The blasts, which killed three people and injured more than 140, will also have an affect on major races moving forward.

One race is the London Marathon.

London has always been termed a terrorism target, but security plans will most certainly be upgraded further in the wake of the Boston attacks. Race organizers are not revealing what those plans are.

“A security plan is in place for the London Marathon,” Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendent Julia Pendry told the Telegraph. “We will be reviewing our security arrangements in partnership with London Marathon.”

Nick Bitel, the London Marathon’s chief executive, said the race will go on.

“The London Marathon fully expects at this stage that the Virgin London Marathon will go ahead as planned on Sunday, although we are continuing to review security with the Metropolitan Police,” he said.
