In keeping with its mission statement, the Big Sur International Marathon has continued its support of local charities through distribution of grant funding. For 2012, $220,000 in grants were awarded to 76 organizations on the Monterey Peninsula and in Big Sur.

Since its inaugural event in 1986, the Big Sur International Marathon has been able to provide grant funding, primarily to organizations that help stage the race. Scout groups, youth and arts associations, health organizations, volunteer fire brigades, school programs and others are among the beneficiaries.

“The Big Sur Marathon makes a significant contribution to the health and welfare of our community,” noted race chairman Wayne Richey. “We want to help those that are helping us fulfill our goals of staging a world class event.”

The Big Sur International Marathon is a 501(c)3 non profit organization whose mission is to serve the community by producing a world-class marathon and related fun events that raise money to benefit local charities, while promoting health and fitness. The primary source of funding is from sponsor contributions and individual donations.

To date, $2.9 million has been donated throughout Monterey County from the marathon. An additional $377,000 has been donated to groups from the newer Half Marathon on Monterey Bay and directly to schools from the annual Schools’ Competition held during marathon weekend.

The grants were awarded at an annual reception held Tuesday, October 16 at Ferrante’s atop the Monterey Marriott. A complete list of recipients is included below.
