Livestrong, Austin Marathon Cut Ties

The two parties signed a 10-year deal 18 months ago.

The latest fallout from the scandal involving disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong is hitting the popular Austin Marathon.

Livestrong, the cancer charity Armstrong founded in 1997 before he resigned late last year, will no longer sponsor the race and its younger brother, the Austin Half-Marathon.

Armstrong’s world has crumbled around him since he told Oprah in January about his use of performance-enhancing drugs and blood doping practices during his once storied cycling career — a career that saw him win seven straight Tour de France titles from 1999-2005. He has since been stripped of the victories, he’s lost all of his sponsors, and he faces a multitude of lawsuits.

The Austin-based Livestrong forced him out of the organization in an effort to distance itself from Armstrong’s misdeeds.

Eighteen months ago, Livestrong and the Austin Marathon and Half-Marathon signed a 10-year deal, a relationship that carried with it the anticipation of bringing $120 million in economic impact to Austin.
