Linet Masai Is Expecting A Win In Spain

The winner at the Kenyan trials thinks she deserves the gold.

With the World Cross-Country Championships only three days away, all eyes are on Linet Masai. The Kenyan already has quite an impressive resume having won the the 10,000m gold medal at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.

Not mincing words, Masai said she thinks she should have won gold at the 2008 and 2009 Cross-Country World Championships. “I believe I was denied my gold medals in Amman (2008) and Poland (2009) and I’m still bitter about it. It is my hope the disappointment will be erased in Spain,” she said after making the Kenyan team at the national championships.

Teammate and second-place finisher at the Kenyan trials Vivian Cheruiyot is expected to give Masai a run for the money. Cheruiyot was the 2000 world junior champion and has yet to win a senior medal. “I have fulfilled my first objective of making the team and now, it is to focus for victory at the training camp,” she said.

Masai and Cheruiyot have raced three times this year. Masai has won twice.
