The World Marathon Majors trophy will be named after him.

At the long-overdue funeral of Sammy Waniru, some of the best runners in the world had gathered to pay their respects. One such runner was double Olympic silver medalist Catherine Ndereba.”The last time I saw Sammy was when we visited his home. He was so happy…I only believed he was gone when we went to collect his body at Lee Funeral Home,” she said with tears in her eyes.

“I cannot imagine how London 2012 Olympics is going to be without him. He had this unique running style where you would know he was about to accelerate by raising his arms. I had never seen anything like him.”

London Marathon director Dave Bedford was at the funeral as well. He was representing the World Marathon Majors and announced that the World Marathon Majors trophy will be named after Wanjiru.

“It is only fitting since he won it twice in a row,” he said.
