Legally Blind Runner Wins Flying Pig Marathon

She made her move at the 10-mile mark and never looked back.

She made her move at the 10-mile mark and never looked back.

It doesn’t get more inspiring than this, folks. On Sunday, Amy McDonaugh, 34, mother of three, won the women’s race at the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her finishing time was 2:58:14. The inspiring part: She is legally blind.

McDonaugh, from Irmo, South Carolina, is actually completely blind in her right eye and her vision is 23/100 in her left eye with no peripheral sight.

She made the race look easy, winning with nearly a four-minute margin over runner up Kerry Lee of Cincinnati. According to post-race reports, she made an unchallenged move at the 10-mile mark and ran unopposed the rest of the way.

McDonaugh’s triumph at the Flying Pig Marathon was her fourth career marathon and first victory.

“I have three children and because of I’m legally blind I’m a stay-at-home mom,” said McDonaugh. “After the third child, I needed to get out of the house. My husband would say ‘See you in 20 minutes’ and that turned into an hour. I love it because it’s something I can do. I could never play sports or anything like that. This is the one sport I could do.”
