Large Field Could Spell Disaster For Favorites In Men’s 1500m

Start lists are up and it looks like there could be some big names in trouble early on.
With 49 men slated to start in the opening round of the men’s 1500m at the USATF Championships in Eugene, we may see some high seeds miss out on the final. With that many qualifiers event organizers were forced to set up four heats of 12-13 athletes which will qualify the top two as well as the next four fastest times.
With only two automatic spots in each heat some athletes could find themselves on the short end of a sprint finish. Heat three looks to be the most dynamic, as it will include American mile record holder Alan Webb, 800m Olympian Andrew Wheating, national one mile road champion David Torrence, mile indoor junior world record holder German Fernandez, and 2008 Olympic Trials finalists Will Leer and Steve Sherer.
The men’s 1500m prelims start Thursday, June 25th at 7:05 pm/PST. Live streaming video can be found on the USATF website.
