Gay, Lagat Win Big In London

Rain doesn’t slow down top U.S. track athletes at The Crystal Palace.

Tyson Gay, flying high after last week’s big win over reigning world champion Usain Bolt, kept the momentum going on Friday night, running the fastest 100 meters in the world this year with a 9.78-second clocking at the Diamond League meeting at London’s Crystal Palace.Jamaican Yohan Blake ran a personal best 9.89 seconds to finish second begind Gay, who broke the stadium record with his performance.

“I wasn’t necessarily sending a message to Usain and Asafa, but I think there’s more to come,” Gay told the BBC after the race. “It’s great to be on top of the world – that’s important to me.”

In other action, Bernard Lagat fell short in his American-record attempt at 3,000 meters, but held on for victory over European 5,000 and 10,000 meter champion Mo Fareh of Great Britain. Lagat won in 7:40.36–10 seconds short of Bob Kennedy’s American Record–while Fareh finished just four tenths of a second behind.
