Komon Smashes 10K World Record On The Roads

Kenyan runs 26:44 to take 17 seconds off Kogo’s mark.

Kenya’s Leonard Patrick Komon become the first man in history to break 27 minutes for 10K on the roads on Sunday with a 26:44 clocking to win the ABN AMRO Singelloop in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

The 22-year-old took 17 seconds off countryman Micah Kogo’s previous mark of 27:01, which was set in March of 2009 in the Netherlands.

Komon, the reigning IAAF World Cross Country silver medalist, won last year’s edition of this race in 27:10. Splitting 13:19 at 5K on Sunday, Komon finished 27 seconds ahead of runner-up Sammy Kitwara and well over a minute ahead of third-place finisher Boniface Kiriu.
