Komon Shatters Course Record In Austria

He bettered the 13-year-old mark by 14 seconds.

There were quite a few fireworks on display at the Peuerbach New Year’s Eve Run in Austria on Monday as Kenya’s Leonard Komon shattered the course record there.

Komon, who owns the world record for 10K and 15K, covered the 6.8K course in 18 minutes and 32 seconds–a 14-second improvement over the previous mark.

The old record dated back to 1999 and was held by Felix Limo.

Geoffrey Kirui took second in the race and was given the same time as Komon. Third place went to Turkey’s Polat Arikan (19:05).

Austrian runners put forth a good effort in the race with Andreas Vojta, a 1500m runner, taking fifth ahead of Kenya’s Cornelius Kangogo. Additionally, Austrian marathon specialist Günther Weidlinger made a decent comeback from an Achilles injury with a seventh-place finish.

In the women’s event, 5.1K, young Serbian Amela Terzic successfully held of German record holder in the marathon, Irina Mikitenko.

Terzic’s winning time was 16:03. Mikitenko came in four seconds after her.
