Kogo A Repeat Winner At Ukrop’s 10K

Two Kenyans take top podium finishes in Virginia.

Under pristine skies, Julius Kogo of Kenya was the first runner to cross the finish line at the Ukrop’s Monument 10K in Richmond, Virginia last weekend.

The annual race celebrated its 14th anniversary this year.

Kogo’s time for the 6.2-mile event was 28:18. The 27-year-old was the 2011 champion and the runner-up last year.

One second later, Pius Nyantika, also of Kenya, crossed the line in second. Third place was awarded to Ayele Megersa of Ethiopia (28:41).

The women’s victory went to Ogla Kimaiyo of Kenya, who covered the 10km distance in 32:25. She fell short of the course record by one second.

Jane Murage (Kenya) and Hirut Mandero (Ethiopia) were second and third respectively.

To keep things interesting, race organizers sponsored a “dash for cash” that gave 48-year-old David Hofe a 2.4-mile head start over the field. Hofe was chosen at random and was able to defeat the elites, netting a $2,500 prize.
