Kitwara Back On Top In World’s Best 10K

It can be argued that Sammy Kitwara is the world’s best 10K runner on the roads. On Sunday, he defeated an incredibly talented field in the “World’s Best 10K” that was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He last won the race in 2009.

Kitwara’s time was 27:35 and made it look easy, running alone from the 8K mark into the finish. Dejen Gebremeskel (27:45) and Lelisa Desisa (28:02) finished second and third respectively. Defending champion Moses Masai had to settle for fifth place.

“This is my best time so far this season. It was a good race and I like to run in hot conditions. I trained very well. That’s why I ran confidently,” said Kitwara afterwards.

In the women’s race, the win went to Sentayehu Ejigu of Ethiopia. Eigu was the 2010 World indoor 3000m bronze medallist. It was her debut at the 10K distance. Second and third place also went to Ethiopians: Dire Tune (31:51) and Atsede Habtamu (31:54).

The race was a lucrative one for both winners with each receiving $25,000.
