Kirwa Wins Pittsburgh Marathon

American Mary Akor was the women's champion.

American Mary Akor was the women’s champion.

Kenya’s James Kirwa was the first runner to cross the line at the 2013 edition of the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday.

His winning time was 2:13:37. Kirwa won last year’s race, which makes him the first person in since 1994 to win back-to-back editions.

Kirwa’s winning time last year was 2:14:09.

Stephen Njoroge and Jonathan Kibet were second and third.

On the women’s side, American Mary Akor prevailed with a 2:37:35. Behind her was Hirut Guangul (2:38:05) in second. Third place was awarded to Bekele Dele (2:41:30).

A half-marathon was also held and in that event Julius Kogo was the first man to break the tape. The Kenyan’s winning time was 1:02:57 — a course record.

The first American to come across the half-marathon finish was Matt Levassiur, who clocked 1:08:18.

With 30,000 runners, the Pittsburgh Marathon and Half Marathon is entering its fifth uninterrupted year.
