Kirui Dominates Bogotá Half Marathon

Gladys Cherono won the women’s race.

With all the focus on the Olympics presently, one race in South America may be getting overlooked: the Bogotá Half Marathon.

According to a report filed by the IAAF, Peter Kirui and Gladys Cherono–both from Kenya–won the 13th edition of the Columbian race, called the Media Maratón de Bogotá.

A total of 44,014 participants took part in the 13.1-mile event, which is an IAAF Gold Label Race.

Kirui, who is 24, was in the lead pack from the beginning–a pack comprised of Wilson Chebet, Isaac Macharia, Sammy Kitwara and Victor Kipchichi.

Feyisa Lelisa, an Ethiopian, was also in the mix, and it was he who took on Kirui in the 10th kilometer.

However, Kirui broke Lelisa by the 14th kilometer and ran the rest of the race unopposed. His finishing time: 1:02:26, which was six seconds off the course record.

Cherono’s strategy was similar to Kirui’s. The 28-year-old held the lead from the beginning.

She crossed the finish in 1:13:27.
