Kiprotich Gets $80,000 For Parents’ Home

His nation’s president gave him a surprise check.

Uganda’s newest hero, Olympic Marathon gold medalist Stephen Kiprotich, has now become a wonderful son. The man who took down the likes of Kenya’s Abel Kirui and Wilson Kipsang in London last week recently returned home for a stunning hero’s welcome.

He has pledged that he will buy his elderly parents, who currently live in the Western equivalent of a hovel, a new home.

Kiprotich met with Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni who gave the marathoner the large check.The money is to “be deposited on his account before the close of business today,” according to the president’s office.

According the World Bank, Uganda’s per-capita annual GDP is approximately $500.

Additionally, Museveni committed to constructing a three-bedroom house for Kiprotich’s parents.

But the house will not be entirely constructed with state funds as the country’s daily newspaper, New Vision, has raised $120,000 from public and corporate donations for Kiprotich.

When not running, Kiprotich works as a prison warden and was recently promoted.
