WINTERGREEN, VA — Max King and Ellie Greenwood ran away from some of North America’s best ultrarunners to win the second annual Ultra Race of Champions 100K races on Saturday.
King, racing for the third championship race in eight days, won the men’s 100K (62-mile) race in 7 hours, 57 minutes and 2 seconds. The 32-year-old Bend, Ore., resident took the lead early in the race and outran fellow Cornell graduate Sage Canaday, who was second in 8:12:05.
Greenwood, 33, the 2011 and 2012 Western States 100 champion who hails from Banff, Alberta, won the women’s race in 9:04:09. Runner-up Ragan Petrie of Arlington, Va., was second in 9:51:15. Both King and Greenwood took home $5,000 winner’s checks.

The event was held on the rolling wooded terrain in and around Wintergreen Resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains southwest of Charlottesville. The course included trail and road sections, with a mixture of flat, wooded, hilly and rolling terrain.
King, a 2:14 marathoner, won the 21K XTERRA Trail Running National Championship in Utah and the USATF 50K Trail Championships in Bend on back-to-back days last weekend. However, King had never run 100K prior to Saturday’s race; his longest races to date topped out at 50 miles. Canaday, a 2:16 marathoner, was fresh off representing the U.S. at the 14K World Mountain Running Championships in Italy (12th) and the long-distance World Mountain Running Championships at the Jungfrau Marathon in Switzerland (fifth).
The UROC races were launched last year by veteran ultrarunners Russell Gill and Dr. Francesca Conte via Bad to the Bone Endurance Sports. Next year’s UROC races will be held in Colorado, with the 100K course starting in Breckenridge and ending in Vail.
