Killer Kilo Planned For Millrose Games

Four top middle-distance runners are gunning for the American 1K record.

Organizers of the 2014 NYRR Millrose Games came out swinging with its first athlete announcement today, proclaiming that four of the top 800-meter runners in the United States — including World Championships silver medalist Nick Symmonds — would run a 1,000-meter race at the meet on Feb. 15. Their goal is to break David Krummenacker’s longstanding national record of 2:17.86 set in 2002.

“The 1000m indoor American record is one that I have had my eye on for a very long time,” said Symmonds through a statement provided by meet organizers. “I truly believe the Armory is the best track for an attempt and I am confident that the passionate New York City crowd will cheer the field on to a new record.”

Joining Symmonds on the Armory’s brand new, $1.4MM Mondo track will be U.S. 800m champion Duane Solomon, U.S. indoor 600m record holder Erik Sowinski (who set that record at the Millrose Games in 2013), and 2011 NCAA 800m champion Robby Andrews.

Although a world record is always possible, the world indoor record for 1000m is significantly faster than the U.S. mark. At Birmingham, England in 2000, Wilson Kipketer clocked 2:14.96.
